Ferntransport is a term used in botany and ecology to refer to the dispersal and movement of fern propagules—principally spores—across landscapes. The concept focuses on how spores released from sori on the underside of fronds are carried away by wind and, to a lesser extent, water, shaping fern distribution, colonization dynamics, and community composition.

Fern spores are typically very small and produced in large numbers. Once released, they become entrained in air currents and can travel long distances, depending on atmospheric conditions, spore size, and release timing. Local-scale dispersal is augmented by rain splash and surface water movement, while occasional animal-mediated transport has been observed in some ecosystems.

Ecological significance includes post-disturbance recovery, island biogeography, and metapopulation dynamics. Ferntransport helps explain why ferns often appear in clusters around disturbance margins and how rare long-range colonization events occur. The term is used in some German-language ecology literature to describe long-distance spore movement.

Methodology for studying ferntransport includes spore traps and aerobiological sampling to quantify spore flux, genetic and phylogeographic analyses to identify source populations, and dispersal modeling that incorporates wind fields and landscape structure.

Current limitations include incomplete understanding of microclimatic effects on release, persistence of spore viability, and the link between dispersal and successful recruitment. Ongoing work aims to refine dispersal kernels for diverse fern taxa and incorporate Ferntransport into landscape and climate-change models.
