Feministit is a term used to refer to individuals who identify with or advocate for feminism. Feminism itself is a range of social movements, political movements, and ideologies that aim to define and establish the political, economic, personal, and social equality of the sexes. While the core principle is equality, different waves and branches of feminism have emerged over time, focusing on various aspects of gender inequality and proposing diverse strategies for change.

Historically, early feminist movements, often termed the "first wave," primarily focused on gaining basic legal rights for women, such as suffrage and property rights. The "second wave" of feminism, gaining prominence in the 1960s and 1970s, broadened the scope to include issues of sexuality, family, the workplace, and reproductive rights, challenging patriarchal structures more broadly. The "third wave," beginning in the 1990s, often focused on intersectionality, acknowledging how gender inequality intersects with other forms of discrimination based on race, class, sexual orientation, and other identities. Contemporary feminism, sometimes referred to as the "fourth wave," continues to address these intersecting oppressions, often leveraging digital technologies and social media to organize and advocate.

Feministit can come from all genders and backgrounds. While historically the term was often associated with women, many men also identify as feminists and actively work towards gender equality. The specific beliefs and priorities of feminists can vary significantly, reflecting the diverse interpretations and applications of feminist theory. The overarching goal, however, remains the dismantling of gender-based discrimination and the achievement of full equality for all individuals, regardless of their gender.
