Felületkezelésen is the Hungarian term for surface treatment. It encompasses a wide range of processes applied to the surface of a material to alter its properties, appearance, or performance. These treatments can be mechanical, chemical, or physical in nature.

Mechanical surface treatments involve altering the surface through physical means, such as grinding, polishing, sandblasting, or shot peening. These methods can improve surface smoothness, remove imperfections, or induce compressive stress to enhance fatigue strength.

Chemical surface treatments utilize chemical reactions to modify the surface. Examples include anodizing, phosphating, passivation, and plating. Anodizing, for instance, creates a protective oxide layer on metals like aluminum, improving corrosion resistance and allowing for dyeing. Phosphating forms a conversion coating that enhances paint adhesion and corrosion protection.

Physical surface treatments involve applying a layer of another material or altering the surface through thermal or energy-based methods. This includes painting, powder coating, electroplating, PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition), and CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition). Painting and powder coating provide decorative and protective layers. Electroplating deposits a thin layer of metal onto the substrate. PVD and CVD are advanced techniques used to apply thin, hard coatings for wear resistance and other specialized properties.

The purpose of surface treatment can vary greatly. It may be to improve corrosion resistance, enhance wear resistance, increase hardness, modify electrical or thermal conductivity, improve adhesion for subsequent coatings, or to achieve a desired aesthetic appearance. The selection of the appropriate surface treatment depends heavily on the base material, the intended application, and the desired outcome.
