A felületmodell, or surface model, is a digital representation of the outer boundary of a three-dimensional object or environment. Unlike solid models that define the volume enclosed by surfaces, a surface model focuses solely on the surfaces themselves, without necessarily implying a solid interior. These models are typically constructed using a collection of connected geometric primitives such as polygons, NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines), or parametric surfaces.

Surface models are widely used in various fields, including computer graphics, engineering design, and manufacturing. In computer graphics, they are essential for rendering realistic images of objects and scenes. Engineers utilize surface models for conceptual design, visualization, and for defining the shape of parts before detailed solid modeling or analysis. In manufacturing, particularly with CNC machining, surface models can guide the toolpath generation for creating physical objects.

The primary advantage of surface modeling lies in its ability to represent complex, freeform shapes that might be difficult or impossible to define with simpler geometric primitives. They offer flexibility in design and are often employed in industries where organic or highly stylized forms are prevalent, such as automotive design, aerospace, and product design. However, surface models alone do not inherently contain information about the object's mass properties or internal structure, which are typically handled by solid modeling techniques.
