Feedbacksløyfer, or feedback loops, are a fundamental concept in systems thinking and cybernetics. They describe a situation where the output of a system is fed back into the system as input, influencing its future behavior. This creates a circular causal relationship.

There are two main types of feedback loops: positive and negative.

Positive feedback can lead to rapid change or instability.

A negative feedback loop counteracts or dampens the initial change, working to maintain stability. It brings the system back towards a set point or equilibrium. Examples include a thermostat regulating room temperature, where a rise in temperature triggers actions to cool the room, or the human body regulating blood sugar levels. Negative feedback is crucial for maintaining homeostasis and stability in many natural and engineered systems.

Understanding feedback loops is essential for analyzing and managing complex systems, from biological organisms and ecosystems to economic markets and social structures. Identifying and understanding these loops allows for better prediction of system behavior and more effective intervention when necessary.
