Fasspänning refers to the mechanical tension that holds a wooden barrel together, arising from the internal liquid pressure and the compressive force exerted by the metal hoops on the staves. The term appears in Swedish-language texts on cooperage and barrel making, and is used to describe the tension distribution that keeps the barrel’s shape and prevents leaks.

The word is built from fass, meaning barrel, and spänning, meaning tension. In practice, fasspänning describes the force that the hoops apply to the staves to counteract the outward thrust produced by the liquid inside the barrel. This tension is influenced by internal pressure, stave geometry, hoop spacing, and the moisture content of the wood. Drying or aging can change the stiffness of the staves and thus alter the tension over time.

Measuring or calculating fasspänning in a real barrel is not routine and is typically assessed indirectly through performance indicators such as leak tightness and hoop tightness. Conceptually, it can be related to hoop stress in a thin-walled pressure vessel, sigma_hoop ≈ p·r/t, where p is internal pressure, r is barrel radius, and t is the effective hoop thickness. A barrel is not a perfect cylinder, and the distribution of tension along the hoops and staves is more complex, requiring practical inspection and experience in coopering.

Significance lies in maintaining leak prevention and structural integrity during use, especially for aging liquids like wine or spirits. Proper fasspänning helps ensure uniform contact between staves and hoops and reduces the risk of distortion or leakage.
