Fascikulaatio, or fasciculation, refers to small, involuntary muscle twitches. These twitches are visible under the skin and are caused by the spontaneous discharge of a motor unit, which consists of a motor neuron and the muscle fibers it innervates. Fasciculations are typically brief and can occur in any voluntary muscle.

The exact cause of fasciculations can vary. Often, they are benign and can be triggered by factors such as stress, fatigue, caffeine, certain medications, or electrolyte imbalances. In these cases, fasciculations are usually temporary and resolve on their own. However, persistent or widespread fasciculations can sometimes be a symptom of an underlying neurological disorder.

Conditions that can be associated with fasciculations include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), and peripheral neuropathy. These conditions affect motor neurons, leading to their dysfunction and subsequent muscle twitches. Other, less common causes can include nerve entrapment or irritation.

Diagnosis of fasciculations usually begins with a medical history and physical examination. Doctors may order tests such as electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies to assess muscle and nerve activity. If fasciculations are deemed to be a symptom of a serious condition, further investigation and treatment will be directed at the underlying cause. In most benign cases, no specific treatment is required as the twitches are harmless.
