The term fuses “fail-operational” with a Latin-inspired plural ending and has appeared in academic and industry discussions since the mid-2020s to describe a family of strategies rather than a single standard.

Core features include redundancy across critical subsystems; modular architectures that isolate faults; continuous health monitoring and prognostics; fault-tolerant control laws that reconfigure in real time; and decision support that preserves human oversight when needed.
