Failikasti is a storage unit designed to organize and store physical documents and files. The term is Estonian, formed from fail meaning “file” and kasti meaning “box” or “cabinet.” In English, it corresponds to a file cabinet. Failikastid are used in offices, schools, and homes to keep papers, forms, and records accessible and organized.

Design and types: There are vertical file cabinets, tall with narrow drawers for letter or A4 documents, and lateral cabinets with wider drawers for larger formats or higher capacity. Drawers run on metal slides; many units have labeling areas on the front and hang rails for filing folders. Some models are mobile on casters; others are stationary. Locking options include central locking or individual-drawer locks.

Materials and features: Common materials include steel, wood, and composite laminates. Steel cabinets are common in offices for durability and, in some cases, fire resistance; wooden or veneer options are used for aesthetics in homes. Features may include adjustable filing rails, hanging file frames, and basic security mechanisms. Fire-rated versions are available for environments with higher regulatory requirements.

History and usage: Filing cabinets emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the development of organized filing systems for long-term documentation. Today, failikastid coexist with digital document management; many offices retain them for legally required paper records or as backups. Effective use involves consistent labeling, standardized file formats, and periodic audits to maintain order.
