Fagote is a term used in some languages to refer to the bassoon, a large woodwind instrument that uses a double reed. In Italian, fagotto is the singular form and fagotti the plural; in other languages the word may appear in scores or dictionaries to denote the same instrument. In English-language music notation, the instrument is typically called the bassoon, with fagotto appearing mainly in Italian or multilingual contexts.

The fagote/bassoon consists of a long wooden body that is often folded in two sections, a curved metal or wooden bell, and a mouthpiece holding a double reed made from cane. The instrument is played by blowing into the mouthpiece while the fingers cover a system of keys and tone holes to produce different pitches.
