Fagosyyteillä are specialized cells within the immune system that play a crucial role in defense against pathogens and clearing cellular debris. The term "fagosyyteillä" is the Finnish word for phagocytes. These cells are a type of white blood cell, and their primary function is phagocytosis, a process by which they engulf and digest foreign particles, microorganisms, and dead or damaged host cells.

The main types of phagocytes include neutrophils and macrophages. Neutrophils are typically the first responders to sites of infection or inflammation, rapidly migrating from the bloodstream to the affected tissue. They are short-lived but highly effective at engulfing and killing bacteria. Macrophages are larger and longer-lived than neutrophils. They can be found in various tissues throughout the body, where they perform functions such as engulfing pathogens, clearing apoptotic cells, and presenting antigens to other immune cells to initiate an adaptive immune response. Monocytes, which circulate in the blood, are precursor cells that differentiate into macrophages when they enter tissues.

The process of phagocytosis involves several steps. First, the phagocyte recognizes the target particle, often through specific receptors on its surface that bind to molecules on the pathogen or debris. Then, the phagocyte extends its cell membrane, forming pseudopods, to surround and engulf the target, creating a vesicle called a phagosome. This phagosome fuses with lysosomes, which are organelles containing digestive enzymes and reactive oxygen species. The contents of the phagosome are then broken down and eliminated by the phagocyte. This essential cellular process is vital for maintaining tissue homeostasis and protecting the organism from disease.
