It is occasionally encountered in informal discussions or as a speculative label for a phagocytic activity that resembles phagocytosis, the process by which certain cells ingest and digest particulate matter. In standard immunology, phagocytosis is mediated by professional phagocytes such as neutrophils, macrophages, and dendritic cells. These cells recognize targets through pattern recognition receptors or through opsonins such as antibodies and complement. In practice, researchers typically describe these processes as phagocytosis rather than using the neologism. The concept remains closely linked to innate immunity and to diseases where phagocyte function is impaired; for example, defects in reactive oxygen species production can lead to recurrent infections in chronic granulomatous disease.
