In development, Myf5 is expressed in the presomitic mesoderm and the dermomyotome of somites, marking cells that are fated to become muscle. It acts as an early determinant of the myogenic lineage and functions alongside other MRFs, particularly MyoD. In humans, MYF5 has a conserved role in muscle development and regeneration, with its activity contributing to the balance between myoblast proliferation and differentiation.
