faasisidonnaisuus
Faasisidonnaisuus is a Finnish term that literally translates to “phase dependence.” The word combines the Finnish noun *faasi*, meaning “phase,” with the suffix *‑sidonnaisuus*, a form of *sidonnaisuus* which means “dependence.” The concept is used primarily in materials science and condensed matter physics to describe how the properties of a material change in response to alterations in its phase state. For example, a metal that exhibits ferromagnetism only below a certain critical temperature can be said to have a faasisidonnaisuus with respect to its magnetic phase transition. The term is also occasionally used metaphorically in social science texts to refer to the dependence of social phenomena on particular institutional or cultural phases.
Although it appears in a small number of scholarly articles, faasisidonnaisuus has not entered mainstream terminology.
