Eyerings, also known as scleral lenses or ocular prostheses, are specialized contact lenses that cover the entire surface of the eye, including the sclera (the white part) and the cornea. They are typically made of a rigid, gas-permeable material and are larger in diameter than standard soft contact lenses. The primary purpose of eyerings is to correct severe vision problems that cannot be adequately addressed with conventional glasses or soft contact lenses.

These lenses are often prescribed for individuals with irregular corneas, which can be caused by conditions such as keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, or after corneal trauma or surgery. By vaulting over the irregular corneal surface, eyerings create a smooth optical surface, allowing light to focus properly on the retina and significantly improving vision. They can also be used to manage dry eye disease by creating a fluid-filled reservoir over the cornea, providing constant lubrication.

The fitting of eyerings is a complex process that requires specialized expertise from an eye care professional. Due to their size and rigidity, eyerings are typically inserted and removed by hand and require careful handling and cleaning. While they can provide remarkable vision improvement for many, they may also present challenges such as longer adaptation periods and potential discomfort if not fitted correctly.
