In practice, explosion hazards arise from flammable gases and vapors, combustible dust, and reactive chemicals that can form explosive atmospheres.

Different forms of explosions are recognised, including gas or vapor cloud explosions, dust explosions, and combined or secondary explosions after an initial event. Gas explosions can occur in buildings, pipelines, or production plants due to leaks and inadequate ventilation. Dust explosions are a particular concern in industries handling fine organic or inorganic powders, such as grain, sugar, wood, or metal dust, where dispersal and ignition can trigger rapid deflagration or detonation.

Risk factors include the concentration of the flammable substance within explosive limits, particle size and moisture of dust, confinement and pressure, energy of ignition sources (sparks, hot surfaces, flames), and the presence of oxygen.

Preventive measures focus on elimination or substitution of hazards where possible, engineering controls (ventilation, dust suppression, inerting, insulation), proper electrical classifications and explosion-proof equipment, and installation of protection systems (venting, suppression, or containment). Good housekeeping and routine maintenance reduce ignition sources and accumulation of fuels.

Risk assessment, training, detection, and emergency planning are essential components of management. Standards and regulations, such as those addressing hazardous atmospheres, electrical safety, and explosion protection, guide industry practice to minimize exposure and mitigate consequences.
