Exploatarea is a Romanian noun meaning the act or process of exploiting. It is used in everyday language as well as in economics, law and social theory to describe the use of a person, group, or resource for one’s own advantage, sometimes in a way that is unfair, harmful, or unethical.

In economic and political theory, exploitation refers to extracting surplus value from workers or from natural resources. In Marxist analysis, it denotes the relationship in which capital owners appropriate part of the value produced by labor. More broadly, it can describe situations where power asymmetries enable one party to benefit at the expense of another, without fair compensation or consent.

Resource exploitation refers to the extraction and use of natural resources, such as minerals, forests, water, and energy, often with environmental and social consequences, including depletion, pollution, and disruption of communities.

Social and interpersonal exploitation covers manipulation, coercion, or abuse in which an individual or group takes advantage of another’s vulnerabilities, improving their own position at the cost of the exploited person.

Legal and ethical frameworks seek to limit exploitation through labor laws, human rights protections, anti-trafficking measures, and environmental regulation. The term is also used descriptively to describe historical or contemporary patterns of colonial or global inequality in which more powerful actors profit from the resources or labor of weaker ones.
