An etude is a musical composition or a series of compositions designed to provide practice in a specific technical challenge. The term "etude" is French for "study." While etudes are primarily educational tools for musicians, they have also evolved into a distinct genre of performance repertoire, appreciated for their artistic merit as well as their technical demands.

The etude's origins can be traced back to the late 18th century, with early examples focusing on specific technical exercises like scales, arpeggios, and finger independence. Composers like Muzio Clementi and Carl Czerny made significant contributions to this early development, creating extensive collections of etudes for piano.

In the 19th century, the etude gained a new level of sophistication and artistic expression. Composers such as Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt transformed the etude from a purely pedagogical device into virtuosic concert pieces. Chopin's etudes, for instance, are renowned for their profound musicality and emotional depth, while still rigorously addressing specific technical issues. Liszt's etudes are even more demanding, pushing the boundaries of pianistic technique.

Later composers continued to explore the etude, with figures like Claude Debussy and György Ligeti creating etudes that focused on more modern technical challenges, such as tone color, rhythm, and articulation. Today, etudes remain an essential part of musical education and continue to be an important part of the performance repertoire across various instruments.
