Etikkahaposta refers to acetic acid, the simple carboxylic acid with the formula CH3CO2H. It is a colorless liquid at room temperature, with a characteristic vinegar-like odor. It is a weak acid (pKa ≈ 4.76) and is completely miscible with water, ethanol, and many organic solvents. Concentrated solutions, called glacial acetic acid, are about 99–100% pure.

Industrial production of etikkahaposta occurs mainly by carbonylation of methanol, via the Monsanto or Cativa processes, using rhodium- or iridium-based catalysts to yield acetic acid. A biological route exists in the oxidation of ethanol by acetic acid bacteria during vinegar production. In addition to its role as a chemical reagent, etikkahaposta serves as a feedstock for numerous derivatives such as acetic anhydride, esters, vinyl acetate, and acetates.

In food applications, acetic acid provides the acidity of vinegar, acts as a preservative, and influences flavor. It is also used as a solvent, cleaning agent, pH regulator, and a key intermediate in polymer and chemical manufacture.

Safety and handling: etikkahaposta is corrosive and can cause severe irritation and burns to skin and eyes. Inhalation of vapors can irritate the respiratory tract. It should be handled with appropriate PPE, in a well-ventilated area, with storage away from bases, oxidizers, and heat sources. Spills should be contained and neutralized. It is readily biodegradable, but large releases can affect aquatic environments.
