Ethnomusikkia is a field of study that treats music as a social and cultural practice. While the term ethnomusikkia may appear in some linguistic communities as an equivalent of ethnomusicology, it also marks an approach that emphasizes living musical cultures over archival, museum-like representations. The discipline has historical roots in early fieldwork and comparative studies and has evolved toward decolonizing research practices and engaging with communities as knowledge partners.

Areas of study encompass traditional and urban music, ritual and ceremony, diasporic and transnational networks, popular music, soundscapes, and the politics of listening. Researchers explore how music intersects with language, gender, age, religion, technology, and media, and how communities use sound to negotiate memory, status, and change.

Critiques address representation, ownership of recordings, and the ethics of transcription and publication. Proponents call for community benefit, open access to materials, and the inclusion of marginalized voices in interpretation and decision-making about how findings are used.
