Etanolinjekció, also known as alcohol sclerotherapy, is a medical procedure where a solution of ethanol is injected into abnormal blood vessels, cysts, or tumors. The ethanol causes inflammation and scarring, which in turn obstructs the blood flow or causes the abnormal tissue to shrink and disappear. This minimally invasive technique is used to treat a variety of conditions, including vascular malformations, hemangiomas, lymphatic malformations, and sometimes benign tumors.

The procedure typically involves using imaging guidance, such as ultrasound or fluoroscopy, to precisely locate the target area. A fine needle is then used to inject a specific concentration of ethanol, often mixed with a contrast agent to visualize its distribution. The ethanol acts as a sclerosant, damaging the endothelial cells lining the abnormal vessels or the cells of the lesion. This damage leads to thrombosis (blood clotting) and subsequent fibrosis (scar tissue formation), effectively obliterating the abnormal structure.

Etanolinjekció is generally considered safe, but potential complications can include pain at the injection site, temporary swelling, bruising, and, in rare cases, allergic reactions or damage to surrounding healthy tissues.
