Esteröintitapahtuma, commonly known as esterification, is a fundamental chemical reaction where an alcohol and a carboxylic acid react to form an ester and water. This process is a specific type of condensation reaction. The general formula for esterification is R-COOH + R'-OH <=> R-COO-R' + H2O, where R and R' represent organic substituents.

The reaction is typically catalyzed by a strong acid, such as sulfuric acid (H2SO4) or hydrochloric acid (HCl). The acid protonates the carbonyl oxygen of the carboxylic acid, making the carbonyl carbon more electrophilic and thus more susceptible to nucleophilic attack by the alcohol. The reaction is reversible, meaning that the reverse reaction, the hydrolysis of an ester back into a carboxylic acid and an alcohol, also readily occurs, especially in the presence of water and acid or base catalysts. To drive the esterification reaction towards the formation of the ester, excess of one reactant can be used, or the water produced can be removed from the reaction mixture.
