In the context of internal combustion engines, esilämmitys, commonly known as engine preheating, involves warming the engine block and its fluids before starting. This is particularly important in cold climates. A preheated engine starts more easily, runs more smoothly, and experiences less stress on its components due to the reduced viscosity of oil and coolant. Various methods are used for engine preheating, including electric block heaters, coolant heaters, and oil pan heaters.

Esilämmitys also plays a role in industrial processes, such as in the startup of furnaces, boilers, or turbines.
