An escáner, or scanner, is an electronic device that captures images from physical sources such as documents, photographs, or objects and converts them into digital data. This digital data can then be stored, viewed, edited, and transmitted using a computer or other digital devices. Scanners work by passing a light source over the surface of the item being scanned. Photodiodes or a charged-coupled device (CCD) array then capture the reflected light and translate it into an electronic signal. This signal is processed by the scanner's software to create a digital image file.

There are several types of scanners, each suited for different purposes. Flatbed scanners are the most common and are used for scanning documents, photos, and even small, three-dimensional objects. Sheet-fed scanners are designed to quickly scan multiple pages of a document, often found in office settings. Handheld scanners are portable and can be used for scanning barcodes or specific parts of a larger document. More specialized scanners include 3D scanners, which create a three-dimensional digital model of an object, and document scanners, which are optimized for high-volume document digitization.

The resolution of a scanner, measured in dots per inch (dpi), determines the level of detail in the scanned image. Higher dpi values result in more detailed images but also larger file sizes. Color depth, another important characteristic, indicates the range of colors a scanner can capture. Scanners are essential tools in various fields, including graphic design, archiving, document management, and everyday personal use, enabling the transition from analog to digital information.
