Erythropoiesis, also known as erythrocytosis, is the process by which the body produces red blood cells, or erythrocytes. This process primarily occurs in the bone marrow, where pluripotent stem cells differentiate into erythroid progenitor cells. These progenitor cells then undergo a series of maturation steps, during which they lose their nucleus and other organelles, becoming mature red blood cells. The mature red blood cells are then released into the bloodstream, where they transport oxygen to tissues and remove carbon dioxide.
