Eritropoiesis is the process by which red blood cells, also known as erythrocytes, are produced. This vital physiological function primarily occurs in the bone marrow of adults. The process begins with hematopoietic stem cells, which are multipotent cells capable of differentiating into various blood cell types. These stem cells mature through a series of stages, transforming into proerythroblasts, then basophilic erythroblasts, polychromatophilic erythroblasts, orthochromatophilic erythroblasts, and finally reticulocytes. During these stages, the cell undergoes significant changes, including the synthesis of hemoglobin, the protein responsible for oxygen transport, and the extrusion of its nucleus and other organelles.
