Erikoisvärit, a Finnish term roughly translating to "special colors" or "specialty inks," refers to a category of printing inks that deviate from standard process colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black). These inks are formulated to achieve specific visual effects, color matches, or functional properties not attainable with conventional inks.

The most common type of erikoisvärit are spot colors, which are pre-mixed to a precise shade and applied as a single color. Pantone Matching System (PMS) colors are a well-known example of spot colors, widely used to ensure brand consistency across different printing applications. These inks are crucial for reproducing logos, specific brand hues, or when a particularly vibrant or unique color is required.

Beyond spot colors, erikoisvärit can encompass metallic inks, which contain fine metal particles to create a shimmering, reflective effect. Fluorescent inks, which absorb ultraviolet light and re-emit it as visible light, produce exceptionally bright and eye-catching colors. Pearlescent inks offer a subtle, iridescent sheen, changing color depending on the viewing angle.

In addition to aesthetic enhancements, erikoisvärit can also serve functional purposes. Some specialty inks are designed for increased durability, resistance to fading, or for use on specific substrates like plastics or textiles.
