Erbium-containing refers to materials or compounds that include erbium either as a distinct compound (erbium oxide, Er2O3) or as dopant ions in a host lattice (erbium-doped glass or crystals). The most common oxidation state is +3. In nature, erbium is a lanthanide; it occurs together with other rare earths in minerals such as monazite and xenotime and is recovered through processing of these minerals and separation by solvent extraction and ion-exchange methods.

Erbium-doped materials have unique optical properties due to Er3+'s energy levels, producing emission around 1.54 micrometers in the infrared, which coincides with the minimum loss window of silica-based optical fibers. This makes erbium-containing systems central to modern telecommunications in EDFAs and in solid-state lasers. Other hosts include Er:YAG, Er:YLF crystals, and Er-doped phosphate or silica glasses, which can be grown by melt growth, Czochralski, or sol-gel techniques, and deposited as thin films via chemical vapor deposition or sputtering.

Common properties include notable luminescence, relatively narrow emission lines, and sensitivity of emission to the host lattice and phonon energy. Applications span fiber-optic amplification, laser technologies, phosphors for display or lighting, and certain medical or sensing contexts depending on the host.

Safety and handling are generally in line with rare earth elements: erbium compounds are of relatively low toxicity, but standard laboratory precautions apply. Research continues to enhance efficiency, reduce quenching, and develop new erbium-containing materials for photonics.
