Equalisaatio, often shortened to EQ, is a fundamental audio processing technique used to adjust the balance of different frequency components within an audio signal. It works by either boosting (increasing the level of) or cutting (decreasing the level of) specific frequency ranges. This allows engineers to shape the tonal characteristics of sound, enhance clarity, remove unwanted noise, or create specific sonic effects.

The audio spectrum is typically divided into several frequency bands: low frequencies (bass), mid-frequencies (vocals, guitars), and high frequencies (cymbals, air). Equalizers can be simple, offering broad adjustments to these general areas, or complex, providing precise control over narrow frequency bands. Common types of equalizers include graphic equalizers, which feature a series of sliders for each frequency band, and parametric equalizers, which offer more control over frequency, bandwidth (Q factor), and gain.

In music production and sound engineering, EQ is indispensable. It can be used to make a vocal sit better in a mix by cutting muddy low-mids, to add warmth to a bass guitar by boosting its fundamental frequencies, or to brighten a snare drum by increasing its high-end. In live sound, EQ is crucial for feedback control and for adapting the sound to different acoustic environments. Beyond music, equalizers are found in broadcast systems, home audio equipment, and even in voice communication software to improve intelligibility.
