Epäpolarista is a Finnish term that translates to "nonpolar" in English. It is primarily used in chemistry to describe molecules or substances that lack a significant difference in electronegativity between their constituent atoms. This lack of polarity results in an uneven distribution of electron density within the molecule.

In a nonpolar molecule, the electrons are shared equally between the atoms. This can occur in several ways. Firstly, if a molecule is composed of two identical atoms, such as diatomic oxygen (O2) or nitrogen (N2), the electron sharing is inherently equal. Secondly, a molecule can be nonpolar even if it contains different atoms, provided that the molecular geometry causes the individual bond polarities to cancel each other out. For example, carbon dioxide (CO2) has polar C=O bonds, but its linear structure ensures that the bond dipoles are equal and opposite, resulting in a net nonpolar molecule. Similarly, methane (CH4) is nonpolar due to its tetrahedral symmetry, which balances the polarity of the C-H bonds.

Nonpolar substances generally exhibit different physical properties compared to polar substances. They tend to have lower boiling and melting points because the intermolecular forces between nonpolar molecules (primarily London dispersion forces) are weaker than the dipole-dipole interactions or hydrogen bonds found in polar substances. Consequently, nonpolar compounds are typically insoluble in polar solvents like water but are soluble in other nonpolar solvents such as hexane or benzene. This principle is often summarized by the adage "like dissolves like."
