Epämetalliatomit, also known as nonmetal atoms, are a class of chemical elements characterized by their distinct electronic structures and bonding behaviors. Unlike metals, which tend to readily lose electrons to form positive ions, nonmetals typically gain or share electrons. This fundamental difference in electron affinity dictates their chemical properties and the types of compounds they form.

Nonmetal atoms are found on the upper right side of the periodic table, excluding the noble gases which form their own distinct group. They exhibit a wide range of physical states at room temperature, including gases (like oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen), liquids (like bromine), and solids (like sulfur, carbon, and phosphorus). Their physical properties, such as luster, conductivity, and malleability, are generally the opposite of those observed in metals. Nonmetals are typically dull, poor conductors of heat and electricity, and brittle in their solid form.

Chemically, nonmetals are known for their high electronegativity, meaning they have a strong attraction for electrons. This property allows them to form covalent bonds by sharing electrons with other nonmetals, or ionic bonds by accepting electrons from metals to form negative ions (anions). The diverse bonding capabilities of nonmetal atoms are responsible for the vast array of organic and inorganic compounds that make up the world around us, from essential molecules like water and carbon dioxide to complex biological structures.
