The term, a compound of epokë (epoch) and a suffix form used to nominalize concepts, has circulated mainly in contemporary cultural criticism, speculative fiction circles, and online essays since the late 2010s.

Definition and scope: It treats historical periods not as discrete segments but as overlapping layers whose motifs, technologies, institutions, and values reappear in new guises. Proponents argue that epokëepokën helps trace how a current phenomenon can be read as a variation of earlier epochal motifs, while also producing new iterations that modify earlier meanings.
