Epithelial tissue, or epithelium, is one of the four basic types of animal tissue, along with connective tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue. It forms the covering of all internal and external surfaces of the body, lines body cavities and hollow organs, and constitutes glands. Epithelial tissues are highly cellular with very little extracellular material between cells. The cells are tightly bound together by cell junctions, forming a continuous sheet.
The primary functions of epithelial tissue include protection, secretion, absorption, excretion, filtration, diffusion, and sensory reception.
Epithelial tissues are classified based on the number of cell layers and the shape of the cells.
Glands, which are organs that secrete substances, are also formed from epithelial tissue. Exocrine glands secrete
