Epiteeliom is a term sometimes used to refer to a tumor arising from epithelial tissue. Epithelial tissue forms the covering of all body surfaces, lines body cavities, and forms glands. Therefore, epiteeliom can potentially develop in various locations throughout the body.

The classification and specific characteristics of an epiteeliom depend on the type of epithelial cell it originates from and its grade of differentiation. These tumors can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous), with malignant forms being known as carcinomas. Carcinomas are the most common type of cancer.

Symptoms associated with an epiteeliom vary widely depending on its location, size, and whether it is benign or malignant. Benign epiteeliom might present as a lump or mass that does not invade surrounding tissues and typically does not metastasize. Malignant epiteeliom, or carcinoma, can cause more serious symptoms, including pain, bleeding, changes in organ function, and the potential to spread to distant parts of the body through metastasis.

Diagnosis of an epiteeliom usually involves a combination of medical imaging techniques, such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs, and a biopsy. A biopsy allows for microscopic examination of the tumor cells by a pathologist to determine its exact type, grade, and whether it is benign or malignant. Treatment strategies are tailored to the specific type and stage of the epiteeliom and may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these modalities.
