Epitafia are inscriptions placed on tomb markers that memorialize the deceased. The term epitafia is the Latin plural form of epitaph and is commonly used in scholarly contexts to refer to a group of such inscriptions or to the inscriptions themselves. Epitaphs can be found in many languages and cultures, but epitafia often denote the surviving corpus of inscriptions from a particular site or period.

Historically, epitafia have a long pedigree in antiquity. In ancient Greece and Rome, many epitaphs were written in verse or elegiac couplets and praised virtues such as piety, public service, or filial devotion. In medieval and early modern Europe, churchyard monuments frequently carried Latin epitaphs, later giving way to vernacular languages as literacy and local identity grew. Epitafia may be carved on stone stelai, marble tablets, or inscribed on sarcophagi, and they can range from brief name-and-date notices to elaborate commemorations.

Content typically includes the deceased’s name, dates of birth and death, lineage or occupation, and a short tribute or religious invocations. The tone may be solemn, didactic, or consolatory, and some epitafia employ formulaic phrases or stylistic devices characteristic of their era. Epitafia are valuable to historians and archaeologists as sources of information about social status, family structures, artistry, language, and religious beliefs.

In contemporary contexts, epitafia continue to appear on gravestones and in digital memorials, while the study of epitafia remains a specialized field within epigraphy and art history.
