Episztemikus is a Hungarian term used to describe phenomena related to knowledge, belief, and justification, corresponding to the English word “epistemic.” It is employed across philosophy, linguistics, and cognitive science to denote the states and modalities connected with what agents know, what they reasonably believe, and how evidence affects belief.

Etymology: The term derives from the Greek epistēmē, meaning knowledge, combined with a suffix that forms adjectives indicating relation. In Hungarian usage, episztemikus adapts this root to describe knowledge-related properties or modalities.

In philosophy, episztemikus concerns questions about the nature of knowledge, criteria of justification, and the conditions under which a belief constitutes knowledge. It engages with issues such as the reliability of evidence, epistemic virtue, and the role of skepticism, as well as debates on epistemic closure and the distinction between belief and knowledge.

In linguistics, episztemikus modalities express the speaker’s stance toward the truth of a proposition under uncertainty. This includes linguistic forms and constructions that convey epistemic possibility, necessity, or certainty, such as may, must, or their Hungarian equivalents, and how these modals interact with truth conditions and discourse.

In cognitive science and artificial intelligence, episztemikus modeling tracks an agent’s epistemic state—its beliefs, degrees of uncertainty, and how information updates those beliefs. Formal approaches often employ Bayesian inference and belief revision to model how agents reason under uncertainty and manage new evidence.
