Epiduralkanalen, also known as the epidural space, is an anatomical region located outside the dura mater, the outermost membrane surrounding the spinal cord and brain. It is a potential space, meaning it is normally collapsed but can be opened by the introduction of fluid or air. This space is filled with loose connective tissue, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels.

The epidural space extends from the foramen magnum at the base of the skull down to the sacrococcygeal membrane in the sacrum. In the cranial cavity, it is a true space containing veins that drain the brain. However, in the vertebral canal, it is a potential space that becomes significant clinically due to its role in epidural anesthesia and analgesia.

Epidural anesthesia involves injecting local anesthetic drugs into the epidural space. This blocks nerve signals from passing through the spinal nerves that exit the spinal cord in that region, resulting in numbness and pain relief in the area innervated by those nerves. This procedure is commonly used during childbirth, surgery, and for chronic pain management. The depth of the epidural space varies depending on the location along the vertebral column, with the lumbar region generally offering the widest space. Anatomical landmarks are crucial for accurately identifying and accessing the epidural space during medical procedures.
