Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events within populations, and the application of this study to control health problems. It seeks to measure, understand, and predict patterns of disease and injury, with the aim of informing public health policy and practice.

Key concepts include incidence and prevalence; rates; risk factors; and measures of association such as relative risk and odds ratio; and measures of impact such as the population attributable fraction. Epidemiology distinguishes descriptive elements (who, what, where, when) from analytic elements (why and how).

Common study designs: ecological studies, cross-sectional, case-control, cohort studies, and randomized controlled trials. Data sources include disease registries, vital statistics, surveillance systems, and health surveys. Methods also include outbreak investigation, surveillance, and biostatistical modeling. Confounding, bias, and causal inference are important considerations; Hill's criteria are sometimes invoked for assessing causality.

Applications: identifying risk factors, monitoring disease burden, evaluating interventions, guiding vaccination strategies, screening programs, and health services planning. Epidemiology also informs policy during outbreaks and emergencies, such as pandemics and chronic disease prevention programs.

History and ethics: Modern epidemiology emerged in the 19th century with figures like John Snow and Ignaz Semmelweis. It emphasizes scientific rigor, transparency of methods, and respect for privacy and consent. Limitations include observational design constraints and potential biases; thus triangulation of evidence and careful causal inference are important.
