Epicondylitis is a medical term used to describe inflammation or irritation of the tendons that attach to the epicondyles, which are bony prominences on the humerus (upper arm bone) at the elbow. There are two main types of epicondylitis: lateral epicondylitis, commonly known as tennis elbow, and medial epicondylitis, often referred to as golfer's elbow.

Lateral epicondylitis affects the tendons that extend the wrist and fingers, typically caused by overuse or repetitive motions involving the back of the hand and forearm. Symptoms include pain and tenderness on the outer side of the elbow, which may radiate down the forearm. The pain can worsen with activities like gripping, lifting, or twisting the wrist.

Medial epicondylitis affects the tendons that flex the wrist and fingers, and also those that pronate the forearm. It is often associated with activities that involve repetitive forceful gripping or wrist flexion. Pain and tenderness are felt on the inner side of the elbow and can radiate down the forearm.

The diagnosis of epicondylitis is usually made based on a physical examination and the patient's medical history. Imaging tests like X-rays or MRI are generally not required unless other conditions are suspected. Treatment for both types of epicondylitis typically involves conservative measures such as rest, ice application, pain relievers (like NSAIDs), and physical therapy. Physical therapy aims to strengthen the forearm muscles, improve flexibility, and correct any biomechanical issues that may have contributed to the condition. In some persistent cases, corticosteroid injections or even surgery might be considered.
