Enzymfunctie refers to the biological role and activity of enzymes. Enzymes are proteins that act as biological catalysts, speeding up chemical reactions within living organisms without being consumed in the process. Their primary function is to facilitate essential biochemical processes that would otherwise occur too slowly to sustain life.

The function of an enzyme is highly specific, meaning each enzyme typically catalyzes only one or a very limited range of reactions. This specificity arises from the unique three-dimensional structure of the enzyme, particularly its active site. The active site is a region on the enzyme where the substrate, the molecule upon which the enzyme acts, binds. This binding is often described by the "lock and key" model or the "induced fit" model, where the shape of the active site precisely complements the shape of the substrate, or the enzyme's active site changes shape slightly upon substrate binding to achieve a perfect fit.

Once the substrate is bound to the active site, the enzyme lowers the activation energy of the reaction, making it easier for the reaction to proceed. After the reaction is complete, the product(s) are released from the active site, and the enzyme is free to catalyze another reaction. Enzyme function can be influenced by various factors, including temperature, pH, and the presence of inhibitors or activators, which can either decrease or increase the enzyme's activity, respectively. This regulation is crucial for maintaining homeostasis and controlling metabolic pathways within cells and organisms.
