Glacial environments are regions where ice is a dominant geomorphic agent for long periods. They occur in two major forms: alpine or valley glaciers confined to high mountains, and continental ice sheets spanning vast polar regions. Surrounding periglacial zones experience cold conditions with intermittent ice activity.

Glaciers grow by snowfall and compaction; melt and sublimation cause ablation. The mass balance determines advance or retreat. Flow within glaciers creates crevasses, seracs, and complex flowlines; meltwater drains through englacial and subglacial channels and moulins.

As ice erodes rock, it sculpts landscapes into U-shaped valleys, cirques, and hanging valleys. It also deposits sediments as moraines, drumlins, and eskers. In front of glaciers, proglacial lakes and outwash plains form as meltwater sorts and deposits material. Periglacial zones exhibit patterned ground and ice wedges due to freeze-thaw cycles.

Glacial environments host extremophile microbes inside ice and on rock surfaces. Marginal zones support specialized algae and invertebrates; some animals rely on meltwater streams. Subglacial ecosystems in lakes and rivers are of interest for microbiology and astrobiology.

Glaciers hold valuable climate records through ice cores that preserve ancient air and dust. They influence regional hydrology and global sea levels. Ongoing climate change is causing rapid glacier retreat and thinning, altering landscapes, water resources, and ecosystem dynamics.
