Entertainmentgerichte, literally “entertainment courts” in German, is a term used in legal and policy discourse to describe the idea of specialized courts or divisions dedicated to disputes arising in the entertainment sector. The word is a compound of the English word entertainment and the German term Gerichte (courts). It is not an established institutional designation in the major legal systems, and no country currently operates an official court named “Entertainmentgericht.” Instead, many jurisdictions rely on general civil courts, or on specialized IP, media, or commercial courts and divisions that handle entertainment-related disputes.

Scope and relevance. Entertainmentgerichte, as a concept, would typically address issues at the intersection of entertainment, media, and culture. This can include contract disputes between artists, producers, and distributors; licensing and distribution agreements; copyright, neighboring rights, and trademark concerns; platforms and streaming rights; talent agreements; and rights related to publicity, image, or defamation. They might also handle consumer protection matters related to entertainment products and services.

Organizational models. In practice, the idea of an entertainment court could take several forms: a fully separate court dedicated to entertainment matters, or specialized panels and divisions within existing courts equipped with judges and staff who have expertise in media, IP, and entertainment industries. Procedures could include accelerated tracks and greater use of expert testimony or court-associated mediation and arbitration.

Pros and cons. Proponents argue that such courts could reduce backlog, improve consistency in rulings, and provide more informed handling of industry-specific issues. Critics warn of fragmentation, potential unequal access, and the need for significant legislative and administrative changes to create a new system.
