Enrichers are components or processes in information systems that augment an input item with additional information drawn from one or more external sources. The primary goal is to provide more context, improve accuracy, or enable deeper analysis by attaching new fields, attributes, or relationships to the original data.

They are used in data integration, data quality, customer relationship management, content management, and knowledge graphs. Enrichers can operate at various points in a data pipeline, often as part of ETL or streaming architectures. They typically receive an input payload, retrieve supplemental data from databases, APIs, or knowledge bases, merge the results according to predefined mapping rules, and emit an enriched item. Provenance and versioning are common, so users can trace where the extra data came from and when it was retrieved. Caching and rate limiting are important for performance and cost.

Types of enrichment include: attribute enrichment, which adds fields such as location or demographics; contextual or semantic enrichment, which involves entity extraction, sentiment analysis, or topics; and computational enrichment, such as translation or normalization.

Examples of use include enriching a customer profile with firmographic data, annotating a news article with named entities and topics, or augmenting product records with supplier information and pricing. Enrichers are common in search platforms to improve relevance and in knowledge graphs to connect entities.

Challenges associated with enrichment include data quality and source reliability, latency and throughput requirements, schema alignment and data integration complexity, privacy and regulatory compliance, and ongoing data governance.
