Energistandard is a proposed international standard framework for measuring, reporting, and exchanging energy data to improve interoperability across devices, buildings, and energy systems. It aims to harmonize measurement units, definitions, and data formats to support energy efficiency programs, demand response, and lifecycle assessment.

Scope includes household appliances, industrial equipment, commercial buildings, and energy management systems. It covers metrics such as energy consumption, energy efficiency, load profiles, peak demand, and greenhouse gas emissions per unit of energy delivered. The data model supports metadata for device identity, location, ownership, and measurement methodology, and enables cross-platform data exchange through defined APIs and common ontologies.

Development and governance: energistandard is under development by an international coalition of standards bodies, industry groups, and research institutions. It draws on established frameworks such as ISO 50001 for energy management and on existing data exchange practices, while proposing a dedicated energy data schema and a certification process for compliance.

Technical features: a universal unit system (kWh, MJ), standardized performance metrics (EUI, COP, EER, load factor), and a modular data schema. It defines data exchange formats (JSON-LD or RDF), security and privacy requirements, and a conformance test suite for certification.

Adoption and impact: pilots have been launched in multiple regions to evaluate interoperability and reporting accuracy. Proponents argue energistandard could improve consumer information, enable better regulatory reporting, and reduce redundancy in energy data collection; critics cite implementation costs and potential over-standardization.
