Energiakulkua refers to the flow of energy through an ecosystem. It describes how energy is transferred from one trophic level to another, starting with producers and moving up to consumers at various levels, and finally to decomposers. This process is fundamental to the functioning of all living systems.

The primary source of energy for most ecosystems on Earth is the sun. Producers, such as plants and algae, capture solar energy through photosynthesis and convert it into chemical energy in the form of organic compounds. This stored energy is then available to herbivores, which are primary consumers that feed on producers.

When carnivores eat herbivores, energy is transferred to secondary consumers. Tertiary consumers, at the top of the food chain, obtain energy by preying on secondary consumers. At each transfer between trophic levels, a significant portion of energy is lost as heat due to metabolic processes. This energy loss limits the number of trophic levels an ecosystem can support.

Decomposers, like bacteria and fungi, play a crucial role by breaking down dead organic matter from all trophic levels. This process releases nutrients back into the ecosystem, but the energy contained within the organic matter is largely dissipated as heat. Therefore, energy flows unidirectionally through an ecosystem, meaning it enters, is transferred, and is eventually lost, unlike nutrients which are cycled. Understanding energiakulkua is essential for comprehending ecosystem dynamics, productivity, and the impacts of environmental changes.
