Endometrium remnants, or remnants of the endometrium, refers to residual endometrial tissue that remains inside the uterus after events or procedures intended to remove the uterine lining. This can occur after pregnancy termination, miscarriage, or uterine procedures such as curettage or endometrial ablation. The remaining tissue is part of the normal lining that was not completely removed during the procedure, and it may persist within the uterine cavity or form small pockets.

Clinical presentation commonly includes abnormal uterine bleeding, such as heavier, prolonged, or irregular menstrual-like bleeding after the event. Some individuals experience pelvic pain or discomfort, and in certain cases there may be signs of infection. Fertility issues or recurrent pregnancy loss can occur if the remnants interfere with implantation or uterine function, though this is not universal.

Diagnosis is typically based on clinical history and imaging. Transvaginal ultrasound can identify residual tissue within the uterus, while hysteroscopy provides direct visualization and the opportunity for simultaneous removal. Magnetic resonance imaging may be used in complex cases to delineate the tissue and its extent.

Treatment usually involves hysteroscopic removal of the remnants. Medical therapy, such as hormonal suppression with progestins or GnRH agonists, may be used preoperatively in some cases or when surgery is not possible. Antibiotics are indicated if infection is present. Prognosis is generally favorable with complete removal, though recurrence can occur if residual tissue remains or recurs.
