Endocrinology is a medical specialty that focuses on the endocrine system, its glands, and the hormones they produce. Hormones regulate metabolism, growth, development, reproduction, and the body's internal balance. The major endocrine glands include the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries, and testes, as well as neuroendocrine tissues in various organs.

Endocrinologists diagnose and treat disorders caused by either overproduction or underproduction of hormones. Common conditions include diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases (hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism), adrenal disorders such as Cushing's and Addison's diseases, pituitary tumors, parathyroid problems, and reproductive endocrine disorders (infertility, menstrual irregularities, and hypogonadism). They also manage metabolic bone disease, calcium disorders, and obesity-related endocrine influences.

Diagnosis relies on history, physical examination, and laboratory testing of hormone levels in blood and urine, dynamic tests that challenge or suppress hormone production, and imaging studies such as ultrasound or MRI. Treatment includes hormone replacement therapy when glands are underactive, medications that adjust hormone production or action, management of diabetes with insulin or other agents, and surgical or radiologic interventions for tumors as needed.

Endocrinology is a rapidly evolving field, with ongoing research in precision medicine, thyroid and metabolic disorders, bone health, and the endocrine effects of aging. Training typically involves medical school, residency in internal medicine, followed by a fellowship in endocrinology. Collaboration with primary care and other specialties is common to provide comprehensive care.
