Endeminen, or endemism, is the ecological and biogeographical condition in which a species, population, or taxon is native to and restricted to a particular geographic area. Endemic taxa occur when lineages evolve in isolation or persist within habitats that are geographically contained, such as islands, isolated mountains, or restricted ecosystems within a continent.

Two principal forms are paleoendemism and neoendemism. Paleoendemics are ancient lineages that have survived in a restricted range while their former distribution has largely disappeared. Neoendemics arise from recent speciation in a restricted area, producing species with small geographic ranges.

Geographic patterns: Islands are hotspots of endemism, but endemism also occurs in isolated mountain regions and refugia within continents. Notable examples include Madagascar (lemurs and many plants), the Galápagos Islands, and Hawaii. The Komodo dragon is an endemic predator on a few Indonesian islands.

Conservation: Endemic species are particularly vulnerable to habitat loss, invasive species, and climate change. Protection efforts include habitat preservation, the creation of protected areas, biosecurity to prevent invasive species, and sometimes captive breeding or translocation.

Endemism is a central concept in biodiversity research and conservation planning, helping identify regions of high conservation priority and shaping strategies to preserve unique evolutionary lineages.
