Encephalopathy refers to a broad category of brain diseases, damage, or malfunction. The term itself means "suffering of the brain." It is not a specific disease but rather a syndrome characterized by a constellation of symptoms indicating an alteration in the patient's mental state or consciousness. Encephalopathy can manifest in various ways, including confusion, disorientation, memory loss, personality changes, and in severe cases, lethargy, stupor, or coma.

The underlying causes of encephalopathy are diverse and can be broadly classified as acute or chronic. Acute encephalopathy can result from infections (like meningitis or encephalitis), metabolic disturbances (such as hypoglycemia or uremia), toxic exposures (including alcohol or drugs), or trauma. Chronic encephalopathy is often associated with long-term conditions like hepatic encephalopathy due to liver failure, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome caused by thiamine deficiency, or Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a prion disease.

Diagnosis involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and often neurological assessments. Brain imaging techniques like CT scans or MRI may be used to rule out structural abnormalities or identify areas of damage. Blood tests are crucial for identifying metabolic imbalances or infections. Treatment strategies are directed at the underlying cause. For example, managing electrolyte imbalances, treating infections, or removing toxins are key. Prognosis varies significantly depending on the cause, severity, and promptness of treatment. Some forms are reversible, while others can lead to permanent neurological deficits.
