The emésztcsatornában, commonly referred to as the digestive tract or alimentary canal, is a vital system in the body responsible for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste. It is a continuous, muscular tube that extends from the mouth to the anus. The process begins in the mouth, where food is mechanically broken down by chewing and chemically digested by saliva. From the mouth, food travels down the esophagus, a muscular tube that uses peristalsis, wave-like muscle contractions, to propel it towards the stomach.

In the stomach, food is mixed with digestive juices, including acid and enzymes, to further break it down into a semi-liquid mixture called chyme. The chyme then moves into the small intestine, the primary site for nutrient absorption. Here, enzymes from the pancreas and liver, along with those produced by the intestinal lining, complete the digestion of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. The resulting molecules are then absorbed through the walls of the small intestine into the bloodstream and lymphatic system.

What remains of the food, primarily indigestible fiber and water, then passes into the large intestine. The large intestine absorbs water and electrolytes, forming solid waste material known as feces. This waste is stored in the rectum before being eliminated from the body through the anus during defecation. Throughout this entire process, various accessory organs like the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas play crucial roles by producing and secreting digestive enzymes and bile that aid in digestion and nutrient absorption within the emésztcsatornában.
